Breast Reductions: Why Bigger Is Not Always Better
In the United States, it is popular for women to be skinny with disproportionately large breasts. You see it all the time in the media, from models to celebrities. Large breasts are shown off in tight-fitting clothes and push-up bras.
“The bigger the better,” however, is not everyone’s motto. While breast augmentations are still among the most popular aesthetic procedures, breast reductions are now on the rise for women who don’t view their large breasts as assets.
Some Big Problems
Women with larger breasts are well familiar with the problems associated with their cup size. Larger breasts can actually make you look heavier than you really are. They present extra weight on your front, giving you pain on your neck and back. They require extra support which is sometimes hard to come by in a department store. They contribute to obesity because their size makes exercise difficult, and to poor posture. As a woman ages, larger breasts will sag under the weight of gravity. For some women, they can even cause emotional problems as the result of teasing, bullying, or unwanted attention.
A breast reduction can make large breasts into a size that is comfortable, youthful, and proportional to a body type. Many models and other famous individuals who make money off their appearance are opting to reduce their breast size in order to feel better about their bodies. The procedure allows women to keep the tissue they already have, just in a more manageable amount.
How the Procedure Works
Under the comfortable blanket of general anesthesia, the doctor begins by removing excess skin followed by the extraneous breast bulk. Then the doctor repositions the nipple to a higher place on the breast. The remaining breast tissue is then lifted and reshaped. If necessary, the size of the areola is reduced. The incisions are then closed to complete the new breast shape. Sutures used to close the incisions are placed deep in the breast tissue to help support the breast as it heals. There will be scarring as a result of the procedure, but it will fade and become inconspicuous.
After the Procedure
Patients can expect to be sore after surgery, for which the doctor may prescribe pain medications. It’s also recommended that you wear a special support garment or bra to keep your breasts protected while they heal. The initial healing period is about seven to ten days, but it will take several weeks for you to completely heal.
